It is in everyone's best interest that works of art be correctly attributed to Roy Lichtenstein and be appropriately documented. This is fundamental to the construction of comprehensive catalogues raisonnés as well as to the maintenance of an atmosphere of accurate artistic presentation. With the proliferation of traditional and online auctions and e-business, informal or unregulated trading, and the complex underground of art forgery, it is not possible for the Foundation to police the vast global art marketplace.

However, through databases and resources of connoisseurship and technical examination, the Foundation hopes to assist the public in the confirmation of correct attribution and provenance of the artist’s extensive oeuvre. The Board of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation approved the implementation of the Roy Lichtenstein Authentication Committee, effective 12 January 2005. Owners of works (paintings, drawings, watercolors, collages, and sculpture but not prints or other multiples) whose authorship may be in doubt may contact the Foundation’s Registrar to learn of the formal process, warranties and procedures. The Committee currently plans to meet twice annually.
